An introduction to Kunming University

Since 2001, the International Exchange Department of Kunming University has been authorized to accept foreign students. Through a unique set of courses and quality management, up to this point over 400 foreign students have been accepted for studies at Kunming University. These students have come from all over the world: America, Canada, UK, Israel, Italy, Spain, Germany, Estonia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, etc. Students of all nations are welcome to Yunnan China to study Chinese at Kunming University!

 

I.  Courses of Study

1.  Chinese Degree Programs

    A. Bachelor Degree Program

      A 4 year undergraduate degree program is offered (including 1+3 and 2+2 extensions for associate degree students) with no entrance-exam required. Foreign students 16 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent (including related transcripts and official documents) can register for the undergraduate program in either spring or fall. Upon completion of the 4 years of study, with passing grades, an HSK score of 6 or higher, and a completed thesis and defense, students will receive a diploma and bachelor's degree from Kunming University.

    B. Associate Degree Program

      A 2 year associate degree program is offered with no entrance-exam required. Foreign students 16 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent (including related transcripts and official documents) can register for the associate degree program in either spring or fall. Upon completion of the required 2 years of study, with passing grades, students will receive an associate's diploma from Kunming University.

      2. Non-degree programs

      A. Chinese language studies

      Non-degree courses are available year-round, with Spring (around the end of February) and Fall (around the end of August) being the most common registration times. Students can choose which classes to join based on their Chinese levels. Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced classes are offered, as well as one-on-one and one-on-two study options.

    B. Cultural Studies, Surveys, and Summer/Winter Camps

    Short-term classes are offered for international college and high-school students interested in studying Chinese or learning more about Yunnan's many minorities. Village visits and other cultural immersion experiences can be arranged. If there are five or more students, one of these special classes can be created.

      C. Other Classes

    Students with specific needs or interests can request special classes and study arrangements.

    *Note: Students who complete their Chinese language studies and wish to transfer into a different major within Kunming University need to meet basic HSK requirements before being approved for transfer: Level 3 for the sciences, and Level 4 for the humanities.

Application Process

1Applicants can download an application form from this website, or contact the International Exchange Department directly by email, letter, phone or fax to request an application form. The completed application should be sent to the International Exchange Department two months before the intended term of study.

2Upon receipt of the completed application, this office will mail the applicant an acceptance letter and visa application form (Form JW202).

3The applicant should then take the acceptance letter and completed JW202 form to the Chinese embassy in their country to apply for a student visa (X or F visa) and then enter China on this visa and report to the International Exchange Department of Kunming University within one week for registration.

4Students arriving on a tourist visa should request the university to change their visa to a student visa at least two weeks before their tourist visa expires, and the university will help them to apply for this change at the Kunming Public Security Bureau.
